When a coffee boss christens his brand Black Insomnia, calls himself Supreme Commander, signs off his emails with Strong Regards, and uses SleepingisCheating as the hashtag, you know insomnia is brewing in the cuppa. Not dinky insomnia. Total insomnia. Absolute insomnia. Because this one is no ordinary coffee. Black Insomnia is officially the world’s strongest coffee. By Preeti Verma Lal

How strong is the world’s strongest coffee? Do not underestimate. Raise the bar. Black Insomnia is so strong that Caffeineinformer.com rates its caffeine level ‘Dangerous’. Still cannot fathom how strong? Put simply, it is four times stronger than the average coffee cuppa. A 12fl oz cup of Black Insomnia Coffee averages around 702mg of caffeine. Compare that to a Tall Starbucks Pike Place, which packs about 200mg in the same cup.

Established in July 2016 and headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, the coffee brand is the brainchild of Sean Kristafor  who wanted to reboot the coffee industry with “something stronger and darker, with an edge”. That’s polite proclamation. His real intent was, in his words, to give a “caffeine-infused kick in the face to the tired, the old and the mediocre.”

Dig further and Kristafor confirms that his “company is done with craft. We’re done with washed out hippy packaging and washed out hippy coffee.” To rebel against washed-out coffee, he wore the lab coat and along with Dr G (Gerald Charles), one of the world’s foremost roasters, managed to roast up the perfect blend of beans, which produces an indulgent smooth sweet nutty flavour that is now available as coffee capsules, coffee beans and grinds, and Black Nitro, a nitrogen cold brew. Black Insomnia isn’t even the strongest that Kristafor could make. He pulled back the ‘strongness’ a bit so that ‘no one dies’ and urges others not to cross their strongest caffeine-level in the ‘interest of public health and safety’.

Black Insomnia Coffee

Aren’t there too many claimants to the strongest coffee tag? I threw a question at Kristafor over phone lines. To prove its claim of The World’s Strongest Coffee, Black Insomnia sent coffee samples to Switzerland-based SGS Laboratories, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company to test their caffeine content. Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), SGS certified Black Insomnia as The World’s Strongest Coffee. With 17,524 mg of Caffeine per kg, Black Insomnia Coffee is 27% stronger than Wodfee which has 13,809mg per kg. Compare it to DeathWish Coffee that has only 13,179 mg of caffeine per kg. That makes Black Insomnia a whopping 33% stronger.

Before you glug Black Insomnia, read the Beware sign. According to Mayo Clinic , “Up to 400 mg (equivalent to 6 mg/kg body weight in a 65-kg person) of caffeine a day, appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in four (6 oz) cups of brewed coffee”. Having just one 6 oz cup of Black Insomnia almost fulfills the recommended maximum intake.
