After Indian Railways’ recent orders, women commuters can now travel on suburban Mumbai local trains from 11 am to 3 pm and from 7 pm until the last train on all days. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to share this announcement. “I am happy to announce that Railways will allow women to travel on suburban trains from October 21 between 11 am to 3 pm and after 7 pm. We were always ready, and with the receipt of the letter from Maharashtra Govt today, we have allowed this travel,” he wrote.

It was only last week that the Maharashtra government had requested the Indian Railways to allow women commuters during non-peak hours.

Other than this, the Western Railways also introduced four ladies special suburban trains on its suburban network. With that, the total number of only-for-women trains on the Western Railways’ suburban network has reached six. Earlier, during the major Unlock announcements on October 16, the state government had said that they would allow women commuters to travel during certain hours from the very next day. While the announcement faced delays, it has finally been rolled out.

The order also highlights that all women commuters with valid tickets/passes can travel during the allowed hours without any QR codes. The arrangement of QR codes is a relatively new setup that has been introduced after the pandemic set in.

Nearly 85 lakh commuters use these trains daily, and about 40 per cent of them are women. This move has brought in great relief to lakhs of women who need to travel to their workplaces.
