The labyrinthine Victorian mansion was originally an eight-room farmhouse until it was purchased in the 1800s by Sarah Winchester, heir to the famous rifle company. She spent almost 36 years transforming it to a 161-room complex that she believed would help her outrun the ghosts of the people who had died after being shot by a Winchester rifle. However, the true reasons for building the maze-like mansion remains a mystery.

The house is considered one of the creepiest attraction on earth, with many reports of paranormal activities emerging over the century. The house has several architectural oddities with its twisting hallways, dead-end staircases, skylights built into the floor, doors that open into walls and secret passageways along with a dedicated séance room to contact the spirits.
