Yearning to go back to the lanes of the city of joy? We know the feeling! However, we are here to make sure you don’t put a lockdown on your travel dreams. Here are a list of iconic Bollywood movies that will take you on a virtual tour of Kolkata. So, sit back, put those headphones on, and allow these films to transport you to the heart of Bengal. By Kumar Shree

1. Barfi!

Barfi is one of the most outstanding Bollywood movies that celebrate the idea of romance and love through silence and music. Anurag Basu made a masterpiece and all three leads—Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz brought forth immaculate performances. The movie beautifully portrays the two faces of the City of Joy — the calm and the bustling one. It is simply beautiful.

2. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!

Travelling back in time is not possible, right! Seems like it is, at times. Especially when there’s an art and production team led by the legendary filmmaker like Dibakar Banerjee. This movie will transport you back in time into the rustic bylanes of Calcutta in the 1940s. Regardless of the movie’s fate at the box office, this will go down in the book of classics and is a must-watch.

3. Gunday

Here’s another virtual trip to Kolkata for you. Gunday, takes you back to the Calcutta of 70s. All rustic and glittery at the same time. Oh, did we mention Cabaret anywhere! Well, now we have.

4. Piku

The film takes you from the Kolkata of Delhi (we mean C R Park) to the actual Kolkata, and that too via a memorable road trip. So, there’s travel, a beautiful story, flawless actors, and Shoojit Sircar’s magic that holds you together and pulls you into this world that stays with you long after the credit rolls. The movie beautifully portrays the delicate details of Kolkata. It wraps everything—from architecture to street food in a delectable bundle and serves it to you on a silver platter.

5. Vicky Donor

Ayushmann Khurrana’s debut movie was special at the time it was made, and it will remain special for being one of the most forefront movies that opened the doors of ‘new’ cinema in India. Even though the movie spends lesser time in Howrah’s home as compared to others on the list, it still manages to capture the essence and vibe of the city, and that’s what earns it a spot on our list.

Other movies that take you on a virtual tour of Kolkata are Kahaani, Love Aaj Kal, Parineeta, Yuva, Howrah Bridge, Calcutta 71, Seemabaddha, Antaheen, Mahanagar, and Devdas.
