Blooming with a rich marine life and vast seagrass beds, Shark Bay lies at the most westerly point of the Australian continent. It is known for its huge dugong (sea cow) population and the stromatolites. The stromatolites are colonies of microbial mats that form dome-shaped deposits. It is considered to be the oldest life forms on earth. Shark Bay is also home to five species of endangered mammals and other species. The excessive presence of carbonates at shark bay has led to the development of the Wooramel seagrass bank, one of the largest seagrass meadows in the world with the most recorded number of species. Apart from all these, Shark Bay harbours beautiful beaches, serene waters and vibrant red dunes. It holds the record of the longest wildflower season in Western Australia with over 700 species of flowering plants. By Swastika Mukhopadhyay

Shark Bay was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991. It was the first Australian site to be able to make it to the World heritage list. The credits behind its entry to the list belong to its plush marine life. The areas demand protection and conservation, which gave birth to various conservation reserves and protected areas like Shark Bay Marine Park, Francois Peron National Park, Hamelin Pool Marine Natural Reserve and other numerous islands.

Places to visit

Shark Bay provides a varied range of aesthetically pleasing spots for tourists. In months starting from May to October, you can experience the beautiful wildflower season. Species of daisies can be located while driving along the world heritage drive from Billabong roadhouse to Monkey Mia. Other species of wildflowers like the Tamala rose, which is considered as one of the regionโ€™s most well-known species and the Shark Bay Daisy, Royceโ€™s Gum — both can be found on the Shark Bay region.

Visitors must surely visit the dolphins at Monkey Mia. Monkey Mia provides a bridge to the visitors to interact with these beautiful sea creatures. Unfortunately, there is no fixed time as to when these dolphins come up. Visitors determined to see these creatures must come prepared for staying up to 24 hours or even more.

During summers, sea cows or dugongs can be seen at Eagle Buff, which is situated about 20 km south of Denham. These dugongs feed on the seagrass available near the shore.

People who love to collect seashells should definitely pay a visit to Shell Beach, where millions of tiny coquina shells can be seen spread out in the entire beach. Especially during episodes of low tides, these shells become prominent and easily accessible.
