Those of you who’ve been looking forward to travelling to Canada will need to wait for a little longer. Amid the rising number of Coronavirus cases in the world, Canada has once again extended its travel restrictions for foreign travellers until Halloween. By Kumar Shree

Much like the rest of the world, Canada had also closed its borders for international tourism. Initially, the restriction was put into effect from March 18 to June 30. The same has been updated every month where a new date has been declared based on the number of cases and multiple other factors.

Currently, Canada has banned all forms of international travel including tourism, recreational, business, etc. And once again, the country has declared an extension of its existing travel restrictions. The same will now continue until October 31 this year.

Since its Halloween on October 31, if the restrictions were relaxed, Canada could have attracted a large number of travellers. This extension can also be seen as a move to prevent any sudden surge in COVID-19 numbers.

However, the government has allowed foreign workers, immediate family members of Canadians, permanent residents (citizens) of the country, those who have been approved asĀ Canadian permanent residence, international students, and protected persons can travel to Canada despite these restrictions.

Anyone who travels to Canada during this time will need to undergo a 14-day quarantine. Once again, some exceptional cases can seek exemption as well. These include members of visiting forces coming to work in the country, those who are crossing the border in a trans-border community, crew members, those coming to receive medical services within 36 hours of their arrival, and those invited by the Health Minister to help COVID-19 health workers.

Canada was one of the first countries that successfully managed to flatten the curve from May till August. However, the cases began to rise since late August and that lead to the implementation of stricter preventive measures. Continuing the ban on international travel is one such measure.
