The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) is set to become carbon-neutral, new director Prasanna Pradhan recently told The New Indian Express. The aim is to bring it at par with the best airports in the world, in terms of facilities and practices, and going green is among the top priorities for the structure.

Bhubaneswar airport to become carbon-neutral

The airport will have indigenous, cost-effective and eco-friendly air traffic management systems in place, making it the first such airport in the country to have so. Further, the airport authorities have partnered with Bharat Electronics Limited to make this place modern and high tech, the director said to the publication.

The airport will have LED lights, an energy-efficient terminal building, a solar power plant and more, and some of these facilities have already been put in place.

What is a carbon-neutral airport?

Carbon neutrality is when a person, company or country balances its carbon dioxide emissions through everyday activities with the amount they remove or absorb from the atmosphere. Thus, a carbon-neutral airport will be one that adapts to green practices on a larger scale to offset the carbon emissions they release.

Carbon neutrality can also be achieved when any residual airport emissions are compensated via purchases of carbon credits. Carbon offsetting means providing funds to other projects that help reduce carbon emissions that cannot be tackled by the airport itself.

A carbon-neutral airport usually inculcates practices such as water harvesting, use of low-emission LED lights, green, indigenous plants, solar energy and more, to be able to offset the emissions that are produced by its daily activities.
