Patterned, vintage windows reminding of old Chinese households, walls tinted in subtle gold tones, a striking wooden panel fitted with Chinese teapots, smoke from the sizzling woks rising up in the live kitchen, and a smiling Chef Zhang Hong Sheng slicing the classic Peking roasted duck right at our table. After treating its guests with authentic Chinese taste and feel for a decade, The China Kitchen at Hyatt Regency Delhi finally decided to take a stroll, and landed itself at the bright and breezy Cyber Hub. Right from the old-style décor with contemporary touches to the scrumptious East Asian spread, everything at TCK by The China Kitchen ships you straight to the breathing streets of Beijing. Let’s start with admitting that the concept of ‘dining around the kitchen’ just won us over. In addition to a live kitchen, the place features separate live stations for noodles, dumplings, teas and desserts, along with an interactive stage for bartenders and chefs, together making it more alive and happening. Take your time to settle in though, for the food here is not any less exciting.
While the TCK Salad is a great pick with its creamy avocado and cress sauce, the Sichuan Spicy Chicken Salad with sesame is the one for you if you want a meaty start to your meal. Do try the Wok-fried Mushroom Salad—a mix of Enoki and Shiitake mushrooms fried just right and topped with fried onions and garlic chips—it remains on top of our list minus a doubt.
The Shanghai Chicken Dumplings with Shaoxing wine are super juicy and flavoursome, and the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings with a tender shrimp filling just melt in your mouth into a burst of flavours.
But the real star of the night doesn’t arrive at your table before the main course—and it arrives in style! You cannot not have the classic dish of Peking or Beijing roasted duck when here. Marinated in honey and sauces for 48 hours before it is tossed into the wood-burning oven to slowly roast till it turns crispy on outside and succulent inside—this one definitely deserves to be savoured. Order one and the chef will personally arrive at your table to serve the toothsome duck, slicing it and rolling it in thin crepes with sweet bean sauce, mashed garlic and cucumber!
You probably wouldn’t want anything else after the big duck, but do end your meal with a bowl of classic Tiramisu or a scoop of Chocolate Rocky Road Ice Cream (served on dried ice with whipped cream and hazelnuts).
Wash it down with a warm comforting cup of Chinese tea—we were happy choosing the Chrysanthemum one.
