Fantasy Express

Sri Lanka

The Kandy-Ella train ride is loved by kids. It is the perfect family journey because the route is picturesque, takes few hours, and connects Kandy to amazing hill country.

Pro tip: You need not go all the way to Ella, stop at Nuwara Eliya instead.

Make a Splash

Sri Lanka is one of the best places for surfing lessons. Not only does it have exciting prospects for pros, but it also boasts beaches with beginner-friendly waves. Weligama is your best bet if you’re starting off. Try the Surfer Beach Camp for lessons.

Get Artsy

Sri Lanka

Holidays are a good time to introduce your kids to the world of art. Head out on a walking tour of the Nelum Pokuna Art Street in Colombo. It is a flea market-cum-art hub, dotted with artists and canvas paintings by the streets. You can also embark on a Galle Fort Walk with advertising executive-turned-tour-guide, Shanjei, who unravels the secrets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site for you and also organises a treasure hunt for the kids (from Rs. 2,625 per person).

Animal Kingdom

Sri Lanka

While in Sri Lanka, you can see many turtle species—olive ridley, loggerhead, and green turtles. Kids can be educated on the conservation efforts being put in, and they get to release them into the ocean at the hatcheries in Galle. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is great for sensitisation.

Go Green

Sri Lanka offers plenty of verdant escapades. You can take your kids on a safari in one of the many national parks, go tea-picking in Nuwara Eliya, or trek up to the UNESO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock).
