Sā means soil in the local Ladakhi language and is an apt name for an exhibition centring around local communities, high-altitude life, nature and the challenges faced by the region. The initiative has been taken up by Michael Pal, Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, and has been founded by Tenzing ‘Jammy’ Jamyang, a mountaineer from Ladakh, Austrian-Sri Lankan artist Raki Nikahetiya and Indian designer Sagardeep Singh.
It features installations by artists including Vibha Galhotra, Anayat Ali, Philipp Frank, Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Małgorzata Stankiewicz and Birender Yadav. Additionally, workshops, presentations or mountain-biking events take place every day for guests that revolve around topics such as sustainability, recycling and renewing resources. The exhibition also has video art projection at night.
According to a report by ANI, the artworks by Ladakhi artists at the exhibition are supported by Royal Enfield. Monisha Ahmed, co-founder of Ladakh Media and Arts Organization (LAMO) said, “The inclusion of local artists is a testament to the growing recognition of contemporary art from the region on a global scale.”
