The iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art is planning to reopen its doors to visitors in late summer. However, this time around things will be different due to the global pandemic. Read on to know more. By Upasana Singh
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, popularly known as ‘The Met’ is one of the world’s largest and finest art museums. It was shut down on March 13 as cases of Coronavirus surged in the city, that soon became the epicentre of the pandemic in the United States. However, after two months of closure, this week the museum announced that it would reopen “in mid-August, perhaps a few weeks later.” This will be done in accordance with New York’s plans of phased easing of social distancing norms and gradual reopening of non-essential businesses. The three locations—The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Cloisters, and The Breuer are expected to reopen at the same time.

As reported by NY Post, “The Met has endured much in its 150 years, and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future,” President Daniel H Weiss said in a statement. “This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy The Met’s collection and exhibitions.”
According to museum officials, when it reopens, it will operate at reduced hours. To maintain social distancing rules, there will be fewer crowds and no tours, talks, concerts, or events that will likely be scheduled until 2021.

The Met celebrated its 150th anniversary this year. Much to our dismay, the Met Gala was cancelled earlier this month and there are no plans to resume the all-star fashion event until next year.
Nevertheless, after spending hours looking at the virtual exhibitions offered by The Met, we are thrilled to know that the museum will reopen soon to the public. Once it opens, it will debut its signature exhibition called “Making The Met, 1870-2020,” and its Roof Garden Commission by Héctor Zamora titled Lattice Detour.
