Soak up the rest of the winter by visiting these five spots in Delhi that are perfect for an afternoon picnic. By Gayatri Moodliar

Sometimes, people forget just how many spots Delhi offers that are perfect for outdoor gatherings. The garden-dotted city is a reservoir of options for those looking to mark the sunny afternoons of January with picnics—should one choose to forego the myriad of outdoor restaurants—and we’ve shortlisted five of the best for you to make a trip to.

1. Garden of Five Senses:

True to its name, the garden evokes each of the five senses through art installations placed all through its 20 acres, a finely curated array of plants and flowers, and food courts that are strategically located. It’s near the Mehrauli heritage village in Said-ul-Ajaib.

2. Lodhi Gardens:

One of the original picnic spots of Delhi, you can’t go wrong with the Lodhi Gardens. An ASI-protected site, it’s also a trip down history with monuments marking the Lodi-era, such as the tombs of Mohammed Shah and Sikander Lodi. Open all year long in Lodhi estate, it’s always been a popular jaunt for Delhi residents.

3. Sultanpur National Park & Bird Sanctuary:

This is more for the ornithologists out there, as it’s one of the hot-spots to catch a glimpse of some rare migratory birds that make their way towards the National Capital Region in winter. The Gurgaon-based sanctuary has four designated towers to test your bird-spotting skills, and is located a mere 46-kilometre drive away from the city.

4. India-Africa Friendship Rose Garden:

There’s no time like the present to visit the Rose Garden in Chanakyapuri, mostly because the roses would now be in full bloom. From indigenous to imported to miniature, there’s a rose for every whimsy in this relatively young park (built to be a display of friendship between India and Africa) adding plenty of aesthetic value to your picnic.

5. Nehru Park:

It’s hosted quite a few food and cultural festivals, so it makes sense that this 80-acre space would also be an ideal picnic spot. You can find it near the Ashoka Hotel in Chanakyapuri.
