Cleaning and sanitation procedures at airports across the globe are making use of cutting-edge technology. Apart from new innovations, old ones are being transformed to meet the safety protocols of today’s COVID-19 world. At McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, vending machines are now dispensing PPE items. By Upasana Singh
The jet setters in Las Vegas, Nevada are familiar with McCarran International Airport’s eye-catching array of vending machines. From cupcakes to cosmetics, one can get almost everything in them. However, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, these vending machines have been transformed. They are not only selling toiletries, but also personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, face masks, wipes, and hand sanitisers.

Travellers at the McCarran International Airport no longer have to worry if they have forgotten any hygiene and sanitary products at home. As reported by CNN, “The whole world is going through behavioural modification and learning new habits, so it’s not unthinkable that someone could show up at the airport and not have the new necessities that are part of travel,” said McCarran Airport spokesperson Christine Crews.
Two PPE vending machines are located on both sides of the Terminal 1 ticketing area as well as a third has been installed near the TSA checkpoint in Terminal 3. With a seemingly ordinary exterior, it stores some of the world’s most prized possessions. With ‘Clean & Safe Travels’ labelled on the machine, there are six rows of PPE products inside. People can retrieve their purchase at the bottom by pushing in a door marked ‘PPE’.
A 10-pack of wipes is available for $5.25, while hand sanitisers cost anywhere from $4.25 to $6.50. The price of a four-gloves pack is $4.50 and an N 95 disposable mask is $8.25. A reusable cloth mask (in adult and child sizes) will cost a traveller $14.50. The stock of items will be rotated based on what’s available.

The airport has announced this latest addition on Twitter, saying “a new option to help protect yourself and others while travelling.” As most airlines and airports across the globe have introduced new safety protocols and measures to protect their employees and passengers against the deadly virus, McCarran airport’s efforts are being widely appreciated.
The international airport in Las Vegas is the 10th busiest airport in the USA. However, due to the global pandemic, it has recorded a 2.3 million passenger drop in March as compared to the same month in 2019.
