The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced the extension of the lockdown in the state until October 31. But Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami assured the people that the latest lockdown will include a host of relaxations as well, with guidelines mostly being concentrated only in the containment zones.

The state announced that all existing relaxations and essential items will continue to be in place as before. As part of the additional guidelines, hotels will now be allowed to function from IST 06:00 am to 09:00 pm and delivery services will be allowed to function until 10:00 pm. The CM conducted a virtual meeting with senior officials and collectors, where he reviewed the current situation and came up with these new guidelines.

Some of the other noteworthy changes that are part of the latest lockdown are the resumption of film shooting with a cap of 100 people on set. Flight services at Chennai airport will also be increased from 50 to 100 from October 1. However, theatres amusement parks, beaches, swimming pools, social gatherings at public places, and a ban on suburban electric train traffic will continue to be in place.

The reopening of school for 10th and 12th standard classes has also been currently put on hold. “Based on the inputs given in the meeting with collectors and by the medical team, considering the present spread of the pandemic and the safety of the students, the GO enabling students to voluntarily seek teachers’ guidance is being put on hold,” the CM said (as reported on livemint.com).
