Before Sunrise: A Romantic Travel Itinerary Through Vienna

Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, we thought it best to play the cupid’s role for couples who travel to celebrate love. You might have considered taking a vacation in some ‘romantic’ European city. Well, travelling can never be a bad idea but how about taking a tour of a beautiful city, such as Vienna, while you role-play Jesse and Celine from the movie, Before Sunrise?

Before Sunrise from the Before trilogy remains dear to many. The 1994 film is so young and fresh and full of life, that we fall more in love with the couple every time we watch it. Vienna is to Before Sunrise, what Baker Street is to Sherlock Holmes. None can tell about the odds of you finding love the way Jesse and Celine did. But we can surely get you to explore Vienna the way they did. Follow this trail.

First Stop
Get down at Westbahnhof Station, Europaplatz where Celine agrees to get down at, with Jesse, and take an exit towards the city. And there’s absolutely no harm in being a little cheeky and using Jesse’s lines to say to your partner that how he/she might miss upon a great spouse and regret later, if they don’t get down with you.

Second Stop
Head towards Zollamtssteg Bridge where they meet the part-time actors. The chances of you finding actors playing the part of a cow are very narrow but do not forget to take a picture here.

Third Stop
Maria Theresien Platz is the park which they pass through next. There’s also the Natural History Museum and Art History Museum nearby which can make for a nice visit.

Fourth Stop
Head towards The Wiener Riesenrad/ Viennese Giant Wheel, preferably around sunset (the scene where the two share their first kiss, remember?). Perhaps, the tiny cubicles on the wheel would make for a nice place to cozy up a little.

Fifth Stop
Take a walk along the Donaukanal/Danube Canal. This is where the two take a walk at night and meet the poet who wrote them Milkshake.

Sixth Stop
Stop by at Kleines Café
where they meet the palm reader who sheds a few words of wisdom before she sways away. “You need to resign yourself to the awkwardness of life…only if you find peace within yourself, will you find true connection with others.” This quaint outdoor cafe is located at Franziskanerplatz, very close to St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Seventh Stop
Walk into the beautiful old Maria am Gestade Church. Can you recall how they couldn’t stop talking even when they were inside this church here? And while you’re in there, think upon, “How a single place can join so much pain and happiness for so many generations”.

Eighth Stop
Café Sperl
, located at Gumpendorferstrasse 11 is where they pretentiously have a telephonic conversation, as part of which Celine talks about how ‘he kisses like an adolscent and it’s so cute’.

They spend a night in the city (so could you) and return to the station in the morning. After 23 years from when the film was shot, the film locations have definitely evolved. So while you enjoy the modern spaces, do not miss the old architecture that holds the charm of this old European city.

BONUS: Because we love the movie so much and the poem, Milkshake, here’s taking you back to 1994:

Limousine Eyelash
Oh, baby with your pretty face
Drop a tear in my wineglass
Look at those big eyes
See what you mean to me
Sweet cakes and milkshakes
I am a delusion angel
I am a fantasy parade
I want you to know what I think
Don’t want you to guess anymore
You have no idea where I came from
We have no idea where we’re going
Lodged in life
Like two branches in a river
Flowing downstream
Caught in the current
I’ll carry you, you’ll carry me
That’s how it could be
Don’t you know me?
Don’t you know me by now?
