After having been in the business since in 2010, the reign of Bangkok’s Michelin star Indian chef Gaggan Anand will be coming to an abrupt halt on August 24. Crowned as the fourth best restaurant in the world, this culinary powerhouse has wooed guests and fed excited food lovers with their range of ‘progressive Indian cuisine’ and molecular gastronomical creations. Their emoji-themed menu boasts of diverse offerings, with options ranging from yogurt spheres paired with a red tea matcha to mini cones topped with sea urchin ice creams. Although no reason has been provided for this sudden halt, there have been hints regarding an upcoming change. However, guests who had made bookings for the restaurant in 2020 are expected to receive refunds.

Trained as an intern under Catalan Chef Ferran Adria, this Kolkata-born chef first moved to Bangkok to begin service at Red, a restaurant that specialised in contemporary Indian cuisine. However, the lack of innovation in the dishes led him to starting his own venture. Since then, there has been no looking back. Gaggan, his restaurant, was named as Asia’s best from 2015 to 2018, and it also earned two stars in Thailand’s edition of the Michelin guide.

Moving forward, no venture has been concretised yet. Earlier, he had decided to shut Gaggan in 2020 to collaborate with another chef in Japan. However, once part of the staff at his restaurant walked out on him, his future planning took a sharp turn. As a result, Anand has now decided to put his Japan plans on hold temporarily but has decided to recreate the same magic with another restaurant instead. Gaggan might be shutting down, but his culinary skills live on forever!
