Indian Railways has come up with a clone train scheme to make sure you travel and reach your destination, even with a waiting ticket. By Kumar Shree

Indian Railways has found a way to ease travel woes of those who end up with a waiting ticket against their bookings. The scheme will be implemented on routes that usually see a high number of passengers as opposed to the number of seats collectively available in the running trains and often produce tickets that are still on the waiting list. The new clone trains will run on these high-traffic routes.

Reports suggest that the Indian Railways will roll out 80 special trains in a phased manner starting September 12, over the next 15 days, for which the reservations will start from September 10. It will also issue a notification regarding the same.

As reported by Business Today, Railway Board Chairperson VK Yadav in a media briefing said, “Wherever there is a demand for a particular train, wherever the waiting list is long, we will run a clone train ahead of the actual train, so that passengers can travel.”

He also said that the railways will closely monitor all the trains to assess and identify which routes generally have a long waiting list. This will help them take swift action when required.

Here are some of the key points about these clone trains:

  • These clone trains will run as alternatives to the regular trains and will even wear the same train number.
  • These trains will operate only when the number of waitlisted passengers on the actual train is significantly high. Also, these trains will only accommodate those with a waiting ticket.
  • The passengers will get their seat and berth numbers only after the chart for the original train is finalised, i.e. four hours before the departure of the train.
  • These clone trains will only have 3rd AC chair cars and will run ahead of the originally scheduled train.
  • Initially, these trains will run from major cities only.
