Architect Tommaso Ziffer has weaved his magic yet again with Hotel de la Ville for Rocco Forte Hotel Group in Rome, and it won’t be an exaggeration to attribute this as his most ambitious project till day. By Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi

Architect Tommaso Ziffer remains one of Europe’s preeminent voices of elegant, substantial design. His celebrated projects include the Hotel de Russie in Rome, home to the stars when they pitch camp in the Italian metropolis as well as Valentino’s Palazzo Mignanelli – both powerful testaments to opulence and splendor of another time. But Ziffer’s most ambitious project might well be another landmark station in Rome – the Hotel de la Ville for the Rocco Forte Hotel Group. Scheduled to open on May 26, Travel & Leisure India was one of the first visitors to this glorious new hotel.

I called on Ziffer at the Hotel de la Ville, where the architect was winding up his extraordinary new project scheduled to open later in May. It was an astonishment of detail and vision. I’ve never seen a project of this exquisite scale rendered with such imagination and an abiding love for the particular. The wallpapers for the dining room and other areas were commissioned by Ziffer, as was the flooring detail.

Tomasso is not only a splendid architect he’s also someone I admire for his collection of contemporary and modern art, which includes key works by Andy Warhol. His love for art lends beautifully into the Hotel de la Ville, which was once a favourite hangout for the European beau monde. Tomasso has retained it’s ‘grand hotel’ vocabulary of the hotel while giving it an original and glamourous remodel that it needed.

With a big fat party – a major fashion house has booked the Hotel de la Ville for a ‘kick it out of the park’ shindig – the hotel is looking to make a high-octave arrival and mark itself out as a sister destination to the Hotel de Russie. With sweeping views of the city, and with its back to the Villa Medici, I know where I’m staying in Rome on my next trip over.
