As countries rush headlong towards development and technological advancement, fresh, clean water is becoming a precious, scarce commodity worldwide. Ways to conserve and recycle water is the need of the hour.
To this end, cities are recycling sewage water, with Nagpur leading the way and recycling more than 90 percent of the sewage water produced by the city. Noida is all set to surpass this and recycle 100 percent of its sewage water in an effort to cater to an ever increasing number of high-rise apartments, parks and other green areas of the city.
Noida has a total of six sewage treatment plants, with two each in sectors 50 and 54, and one each in 123 and 168, with a total capacity to treat 231 million litres per day (MLD). Last week, the Noida Authority had announced that its treatment plant in sector 168 has raised its capacity from 50 MLD to twice as much at 100 MLD. The treatment capacity, at 231 MLD, is higher than the amount of waste water generated by the city, which is 175 MLD. Noida Authority is also planning another STP in Sector 1 in Greater Noida, at a capacity of 246 MLD, where 80 MLD water will be treated.
A study by IIT Roorkee in 2016 predicted that in the future, along with a growing population that will swell to 25 lakhs by 2021, the amount of sewage it will generate will increase to around 310 MLD.
The treated water is redistributed through 20 kms of pipelines to other areas of the city, and it is hoped that it will reduce dependency on groundwater and stop the dumping of untreated water in water bodies.
