Understanding the importance of social distancing during these bizarre times, Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival is allowing one film enthusiast to enjoy the festival in total isolation on a rock far out at sea. Picture a remote lighthouse island surrounded by gentle Scandinavian seas where the beeps of mobile phones are replaced with world cinema, and friends with on-screen characters. Exclusivity will never seem more pronounced.
Although most of the film festival—including premiers and talks—will take place digitally this year, a lucky cinephile can experience it all at the Scandinavium arena and the Draken cinema located on the Pater Noster Lighthouse–states the festival’s official website. While the Scandinavium is considered one of Sweden’s most-attended arenas (icons like the Rolling Stones and Whitney Houston have performed here, and the World Championship hockey games have been organised here), the Draken cinema has been a chosen premiere venue since the festival’s inception.

As part of the week-long ‘Isolated Cinema’ experience, the participant will be expected to report about the films post the screening, and elucidate about the experience of being alone on an isolated rock. This video diary thus recorded will be available for the world to see. Not only will the film enthusiast be privy to exclusive premieres—60 movies in seven days—but will also get a personal introduction from filmmakers before the curtains rise. Plus, provisions for supplies and voyages to and from the island will also be arranged.
To avail this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, one can register on the official website. The final selection, however, will be made basis interviews conducted of selected applicants. The winner will be announced on January 19, post which the lucky candidate will eventually embark on an isolated movie-watching experience starting January 30.
