Google Aims Complete Shift To Carbon-Free Renewable Energy By 2030 (And What It Means For Us)

Tech companies around the globe are constantly trying to reduce their carbon emission by making a gradual shift to renewable energy. Google is one of the leading companies on the list, and it has announced its aim of making a complete shift to renewable energy by 2030. Read on for more details. By Kumar Shree

Last year one of the world’s leading tech giants Google made waves by making the largest purchase of renewable energy. This year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, through a recent blog post, announced that the company has decided to eliminate its entire carbon legacy. Now, what does that mean?

It means that Google will set their lifetime net carbon footprint to zero. Since we’re talking about the lifetime figure, it also includes emissions from before 2007, which was the year when Google became carbon neutral. It was also the first major company to match its energy use with a 100 per cent renewable energy, which was an equally fascinating feat that the company achieved in 2017. The leading tech giant will achieve this incredible feat by purchasing high-quality carbon offsets. And with that, it will also become the world’s first major company to pull off such an endeavour.

Pichai, in his blog post, wrote, “We are the first major company to commit to operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy in all our data centres and campuses worldwide. This is far more challenging than the traditional approach of matching energy usage with renewable energy, but we’re working to get this done by 2030.”

Google will also invest in infrastructure to facilitate the production of 5 Gigawatts of carbon-free energy. It will also help around 500 countries in reducing their carbon footprint, and generate about 20,000 new jobs around the world during this process.
