Disney on Wednesday announced that it will be postponing its initial phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the flagship theme parks in California. The theme parks, which were originally slated to welcome guests from July 17 after months of being closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, will have a delayed reopening thanks to a sudden spike in Coronavirus cases across the country, and specifically in California.

“Given the time required for us to bring thousands of cast members back to work and restart our business, we have no choice but to delay the reopening of our theme parks and resort hotels until we receive approval from government officials,” the company said in its statement although it did not mention a new reopening date for the resort.

The company has also received several petitions from unions that represent the theme park’s workers. A petition demanding the reschedule of the reopening of Disneyland has garnered over 50,000 signatures so far.

“Once we have a clearer understanding of when guidelines will be released, we expect to be able to communicate a reopening date,” the statement added.
