The absolute beauty of international travel lies in the fact that no country is alike and each has in store experiences that are exclusive only to its own culture, traditions and national history. Slovenia is a paradise unexplored that is a striking amalgam of nature’s bounty in the form of turquoise rivers, snow-capped mountains, hot springs, and a Venetian coastline along with the charm of their architecture, decades-old wine culture, and cuisine worth travelling to this Central European sanctum for. Here are a few experiences that are unique only to Slovenia that no other country can boast of. By Shubhanjana Das

1. Sečovlje Salina Nature Park

The extreme south-western part of Slovenia, which shares a border with Croatia, located in the southern part of Piran is the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park wherein active salt-making still takes place by a 700-year old process. This has given a breeding ground for salt-loving vegetation known as the halophytes and migrating birds. The process, which dates back to the 14th century, manifests in a truly distinct landscape.

2. Maribor

There are a plethora of activities that you could explore in Maribor including canoeing, cable car, downhill mountain biking and etc. Even then, nothing will beat wine-tasting at the cellar, which stores wine from the Guinness-certified oldest vine in the world in the Old Vine House. Growing in Lent for the last 400 years, every wine-lover longs to visit the Old Vine House at least once in their life to experience (and not just drink) wine from these cellars by the oldest vine in the world.

3. Žalec

"Zdravnika poklical?" Laško. It seems like Slovenia is on a roll to surprise everyone with its exclusive experiences that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Take for example the only beer fountain in Žalec, located in the Lower Savinja Valley. The beer fountain is a homage to the growing hop culture in Žalec and brews six different kinds of beers, with a certain Zeleni Štajerc, which may just be the only green-coloured beer you’ll have in your life.

4. Škofja Loka Passion Play

When Slovenia says that there is something stored for everyone in its Pandora’s Box, it wasn’t joking. Even if you aren’t much of a theatre-person, there’s no reason why you should miss out on Slovenia’s largest outdoor theatrical performance. The Škofja Loka Passion Play is performed as a procession on streets of Škofja with about 600 actors and 80 horsemen. Seems to us no less than a festival!

5. Planica

Now onto something exciting for adventure junkies! What if we told you that you could zip-line a descent of 566 metres in just 40 seconds in the Planica Ski Centre, making it the steepest in the world? The zip-line is operated over an actual ski jump and is daunting even to the most avid professional skiers.
