Delhi’s Iconic Connaught Place May Soon Become A Vehicle-Free Zone

As a measure to help Delhi’s struggle with space management and pollution control, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to declare the iconic Connaught Place (CP), a vehicle-free zone. By Kumar Shree

Delhi’s iconic Connaught Place (CP) is one of the most preferred hangout destinations for Delhiites. Be it a weekday or a weekend, the ever-so-charming CP is always beaming with visitors.

A huge number of residents and tourists prefer driving to CP, thus, making it over-crowded and prone to pollution. Realising the same (and the fact that CP should mainly be explored on foot), the NDMC has decided to declare CP a vehicle-free zone, making it more pedestrian-friendly. A similar process has been successfully implemented in Karol Bagh market area in the past.

The NDMC has carried the pilot project on Sundays and is devising a final plan for the same. Here are some of the changes that would come in place if the implementation happens:

  1. Vehicles will not be allowed to enter the inner circle of the Connaught Place.
  2. The parking lots and the Palika Bazaar’s underground parking will be available only to vehicles destined to Connaught Place.
  3. Autos and taxis will also be restricted from entering the inner circle and will be allowed to use the middle circle for exit to outer circle.
  4. Pick and drop facility for taxis and autos will be allowed only on selected spots in the radial roads, i.e., roads connecting the middle and outer circle.
  5. There will be no change in the current entry and exit points to the inner circle and the parking lot to keep away any sort of inconvenience.

In order to ensure smooth implementation of the changes and to make it less of a hassle for the public, traffic police consultants, civic wardens and NDMC security staff will be present in the area for helping commuters.
