Chandigarh airport is all set to handle 24×7 operations starting April 10. After all, the good news did take off! By Kumar Shree
After a long wait, Chandigarh airport is finally about to kickstart round-the-clock operations. The local airport, used for both defence and civilian purpose will start 24×7 operations from April 10. The Chandigarh airport was undergoing an expansion work in order to facilitate this new profile. The runway that was earlier at a length of 9,000 feet has now been upgraded to 10,400 feet.
This expansion will allow even wide-bodied aircraft to operate from the Chandigarh airport. The same upgrade will now facilitate the city’s connection to international destinations like Australia, Europe and the US. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chandigarh International Airport Limited, Sunil Datt said, “With 24×7 operations, IT City and Eco City coming up in the region are expected to get a boost. Also, it will attract new airlines and improve air connectivity, which is necessary to bring in more investors.”
Earlier the travellers from Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, travelled long hours and then waited at Amritsar or Delhi airport for flights heading to the US and Europe. With the expansion of Chandigarh airport’s runway, this problem will be solved. After the airport starts its 24-hours operations, it will be closed for a duration of five hours (between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm), every Sunday till September 30. After that, it will remain shut on every second and fourth Sunday of every month for routine repairs.

At present, there are only two international flights operating from Chandigarh airport. Officials have said that they hope this number to increase once the 24-hour operation cycle begins.
