One of the most affordable places in the world could become your next destination for ‘work from anywhere’. Colombia is now one of the latest countries to offer a digital nomad visa with the South American nation rolling out the service last month.

Remote work is still going strong, with several companies offering work-from-home positions. Travel enthusiasts are being able to make the most of this set-up, packing their bags ever so often and setting up their workstations in different cities and newer countries. In a bid to attract these explorers, this visa will allow people to live in Colombia for up to two years.

In a statement, Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, said, “Colombia is thrilled to share with digital nomads the privilege of working from the second most biodiverse country in the world. Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, the Coffee Landscape, and other destinations offer a variety of coworking spaces and accommodations with specific programs developed for more extended stays where remote workers will have unforgettable experiences.”

To be able to apply for the visa, you will need a valid passport from a country that is on Colombia’s visa exemption list for short-term visits. You will also require a letter that proves your employment in your home country as well as a valid health insurance. You need to have a minimum monthly income of COP 3 million (INR 53,625) — something that you can prove with bank statements.

If you earn more than this amount, and you’re from a country that does not require a short-stay visa to enter Colombia (such as the USA, Canada or the UK), you might not need to apply for a digital nomad visa if you plan on staying here only six months in a year.

The South American nation has been a popular destination among travellers, who have been able to experience the country’s vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and low cost of living. As per the 2023 International Living Index, Colombia is one of the most affordable places in the world.
