Our muse of the month, Athiya Shetty, has an air of mystery around her. Humming Coldplay’s Yellow on a wellness retreat, the young Bollywood star gets candid on matters of the mind and body. By Rashima Nagal
What does peace mean to you?
For me, peace is to be content with the little things and self-confidence and self-love are very important. A beautiful, natural atmosphere definitely adds [to the feeling]. I am at peace being at such a serene location [Atmantan] right now.
What do you tend to focus on: mental health or physical fitness?
Without proper check on both, life gets imbalanced. Physical appearance is noticeable, so we tend to pay more attention to it. But mental health is equally important and demands as much attention. Just like you ask for help when you have a headache, you must ask for help when you’re having trouble dealing with a certain emotion. There’s nothing wrong with it.
What is your fitness mantra?
Dancing. I’ve been doing Kathak for a really long time. It keeps me on my toes, fit, energised and really happy.
How do you keep a check on your diet when you’re on the move?
I don’t concentrate much on my diet when I’m travelling, because I think it’s best to adapt to what the locality has to offer.
What kind of traveller are you?
I like to plan my holidays, usually. But the idea of taking a spontaneous trip also excites me and I think that’s going to be next.
Your earliest travel memory?
The first holiday that I remember clearly is a trip to Goa with my cousins when I must have been around four or five years old. Ever since then, we’ve been taking a family trip to Goa around Diwali every year.
What’s your idea of a perfect holiday?
What do you do to lift your mood?
That would definitely involve music. And I love long drives where I can just look out of the window aimlessly and not think about anything. Also, I love to be at places that make me and my troubles feel tiny; that’s why I love the ocean and the mountains.
A destination you cannot get enough of?
New York is my favourite city in the whole world. I hope to move there at some point.
What kind of music do you listen to?
If you could be transported anywhere in the blink of an eye, where would you want to be?
The Enchanted Beach in the Philippines. I recently saw some pictures of it and am intrigued by its crystal-clear waters.
A secret talent that you have?
That I’m extremely flexible and double-jointed. And weirdly, I can dislocate my hip and put it back (laughs).
