While the world fights through these tough times of the Coronavirus pandemic, many industries have taken a hit as well. Among the ones hit, restaurants have also been faced with difficult times as people refrain from dining outdoors. A planned ceremony abandoned due to this ongoing pandemic, the Asia’s Best 50 Restaurants’ ceremony took on a virtual avatar wherein all the winners were declared in a live-streamed ceremony. This seventh edition of the Oscars of fine dining in Asia took place in front of a green screen wherein the winners were decided by a long-drawn voting process comprising of 300 experts — split evenly between men and women — across Asia.

For the second year running, the top spot was clinched by Singapore’s Asian-inspired French restaurant Odette, followed by The Chairman — a Cantonese cuisine restaurant — in China. Den in Tokyo, Belon in Hong Kong and the live-fire restaurant Burnt Ends in Singapore bagged the third, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively. Two Indian restaurants, Indian Accent, and Bukhara — both in New Delhi — featured on the list, coming in at 13 and 45 positions, respectively. Seen country-wise, Japan and China led the pick with 12 restaurants each on the list, followed by Thailand (7), Singapore (7), Taiwan (4), and South Korea (3). Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines have only one restaurant each on the list.

Following the culmination of these awards, the gaze has shifted to The World’s 50 Best’s global gala, the parent organisation whose event is slated to be held on June 2 in Belgium this year. As of now, no announcement has been made with respect to its postponement and is expected to go on as scheduled.
