Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now have a tunnel of his own to commute from his residence to the parliament. The idea is to avoid inconvenience caused to the public, in an already traffic-congested city, especially due to blockades during PM’s daily visit to South Block.

Prime Minister Modi has also planned to vacate 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, which has been the official residence to nine prime ministers and move to the new Central Vista by 2024. The redevelopment plan reportedly also includes setting up a new Parliament building inside the complex itself.

While the PM’s residence will be shifted near the South Block, the Vice President’s house will be in the North Block.

The special routes from Central Vista will be designed in the line of American Mall, in order to separate the movement of high-risk politicians from the general public. This will prove to be very convenient for the commuters who otherwise remain stuck in traffic for hours due to blockades during VIP movements.

Architect Bimal Patel, a Padma Shri recipient, and the president of CPET university is the master planner of Central Vista Project: Reimagining and Renewing A National Icon. As a part of the plan, both the North Block as well as the South Block will be converted into grand museums of India. The South Block will be converted into a museum of ‘India up to 1857’.

Moreover, Central Vista will house 10 buildings that will accommodate as many as 60,000 government employees. The new plan according to him will also help save INR 1,000 crore per year, which are spent on rent for government employees across the national capital.

The total capacity of the new parliament building to be set up in the complex is estimated to be of 1,548 seats, 1,000 chambers, and a golden spire. The eight-storey buildings will also have underground shuttles connecting each other, for an easy commute.
