Five 1-Day Getaways For Independence Day Weekend From 5 Metropolitan Cities Of India

Even though we are grieving for August 15 falling on a Thursday instead of a Friday, we are insistent on making the most of it. That’s why we bring you five amazing one-day getaways from the biggest Indian metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. Pack your bags for a quick one-day getaway to celebrate India’s independence. By Shubhanjana Das

1. Kuchesar Mud Fort from Delhi

Delhi has access to some of the absolute best vacay destinations, be it for a day or fifteen. Desserts, cold desserts, mountains, national parks, natural lakes or even forests—no matter what is your jam, it is at a few hours’ distance from the national capital. The beautiful British-era Kuchesar Mud fort is now an exotic heritage hotel. Situated on the lush Ganga basin, the landscape offers the perfect background to live the rural life for a day. Try your hand at pottery and kite flying, or venture on a bullock cart or take a walk in the village. The getaway is ideal for unwinding and reconnecting to your roots in a day.

Distance from Delhi: 129 km

2. Shantiniketan from Kolkata

Shantiniketan is unarguably one of the richest treasures in terms of heritage, culture, history and its people in West Bengal. It has in store every ingredient of the perfect one-day getaway recipe—starting from a taste of the rural life to soaking in the culture and lineage of the Rabindranath Tagore. P.S. You’ll be in good luck if it rains, for there is no experience like witnessing Shantiniketan when it pours.

Distance from Kolkata: 162 km

3. Lohagad Fort from Mumbai

Lohagad Fort is great for both Mumbai and Pune locals, offering a blend of culture, a dash of history and a generous serving of nature. The lush greenery surrounding the area is evident from any of the view spots: Tung and Tikona Hills, the Pavana Dam and the Duke’s Nose. Besides, it’s a fun trek to get to the fort, making it perfect for a day’s trip!

Distance from Mumbai: 98.6 km

4. Shivanasamudra Falls from Bangalore

If you have one day to take it all in, then might as well go all in, right? That’s what Shivanasamudra, or Shiva’s Sea is all about. The downpour breathes life to this cascading wonder, with a 200 ft fall. However, peak monsoon can get pretty violent and we strongly recommend against swimming. You can sit by and watch as the waterfall hits the rocks with all its might. Sit back, relax and watch the show.

Distance from Bangalore: 130 km

5. Kanchipuram from Chennai

The silk city of Kanchipuram is wrapped in the pride of being the globally-renowned crafted silk sarees, while also packing in the glory of its culture and heritage in its many temples. Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi Amman, Devarajaswami and Kailasanathar temples are only few of the many examples of the Dravidian legacy in the area. If you are an artist, a visit to these temples will fill you up with inspiration. Bird watchers, you can check out the the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, home to a variety of both resident and migratory birds. It goes without saying that a Kanchipuram sari makes for the absolute best souvenir to bring from this temple city.

Distance from Chennai: 72 km
